A large part of municipal waste consists of organic material, which makes the use of biological treatment processes particularly interesting. After all, energy and high-quality compost can be obtained from this material. In addition, the recycling of organic waste is of great importance for climate protection, as it leads to uncontrolled climate gas emissions if left untreated.

Aerobic Waste Treatment

According to the name, aerobic waste treatment is a process in which the biological decomposition of organic waste takes place using oxygen from the ambient air. We offer various options for this:

  • Intensive Composting Tunnels
    With the intensive composting tunnels, we offer you a completely closed system in which all processes can be controlled fully automatically. This also applies to filling and emptying by means of appropriate tunnel infeed and discharge devices. We also offer the appropriate process technology for exhaust air collection and cleaning. In addition, the batch system allows different materials to be treated side by side in each tunnel as required. Whether it is composting, stabilisation, drying of organic and residual waste or substitute fuel, the intensive composting tunnel delivers the best possible results.
  • CONVAERO – Membrane-Covered Composting & Drying
    The process fills the gap between open windrow composting and complex intensive composting tunnels. This is a quasi-closed system with pressurised aeration under full process control. The special cover membrane reduces the escape of odours and other volatiles while providing an insulating layer over the material for biological treatment.  This not only speeds up the drying or degradation process, but also ensures reliable hygienisation of the material due to the even temperature distribution over the entire cross-section. Through the optional use of our CONVAERO CON turner, the membrane can be rolled up during turning and unrolled again at the same time.
  • Open Lane Composting
    Open lane composting is very similar to open windrow composting, but here the waste for composting is placed in fixed lanes and separated from each other by concrete walls. Our LANE TURNERs drive on the walls and transfer the material during this process. They can handle lane widths of 4.5 to 5 metres. A lane change is possible without any problems. The infeed and discharge as well as the aeration of the lanes can be automated in this case.
  • Open Windrow Composting
    Composting is carried out with our self-propelled BACKHUS turners. This option offers maximum flexibility, as the windrows can be lined up foot by foot anywhere. Depending on requirements, turners are available for windrow widths from 3 to 7.8 m. This means transfer capacities of 700 to 7000 m³ per hour. The process can also be used for the post-composting of a closed intensive composting system. The use of the turners can reduce the composting process from around twelve months to up to two months.

Anaerobic Waste Treatment

Anaerobic waste treatment is used in the production of biogas through dry fermentation. We draw on BEKON's many years of experience here. Within our group, BEKON is the specialist for generating energy from organic waste. 

Dry Fermentation in Batch Operation
Fermentation takes place in tunnel-like dry fermenters that can be operated fully automatically. This also applies to the filling process. Thanks to batch operation, different "batches" can be fermented in each of the individual tunnels, for example domestic or organic waste. Conversion for the fermentation of a different material is not necessary, which makes the plants very flexible. The produced biogas can then be used directly for electricity generation or processed into biomethane of natural gas quality. It is also possible to use the heat generated in the process to operate the plant or to feed it into a district heating system. After fermentation, the fermentation residues are stabilised in composting tunnels. For optimal results, we recommend the use of our digestate mixer. If the treated material is organic waste, it is processed into quality compost.

Dry Fermentation With Plug-Flow-Process
As an alternative to batch operation, BEKON also builds plants with plug-flow fermenters. Here, fermentation takes place in a continuous process with particularly large treatment capacities. In addition, the process convinces with very high biogas yields.
