How do the Various Eggersmann Turning Technologies Differ From Each Other?

We at Eggersmann offer a wide range of turners for windrow and lane composting:

  • Triangular Windrow Composting
    BACKHUS A 30 to A 75
  • Open / Closed Lane Composting
  • Open Lane Composting With Membrane Cover
CONVAERO CON 60 to CON 100

Within open windrow composting, the BACKHUS A 30 and 38 form the smaller performance segment, while the BACKHUS A 45, A 50 and A 55 cover the middle segment. The BACKHUS A 60, A 65 and A 75 together represent the upper class. The BACKHUS A 45 to A 75 essentially only differ in terms of transfer capacity and machine size - the excellent standard equipment and extensive customisation options are the same. The BACKHUS A 38 can already boast many of these aspects, but as a transition between the BACKHUS A 30 and A 45, it strikes a balance between compactness with minimised investment costs and the high level of equipment required for our products.

For Which Windrow Widths and Turning Capacities are the BACKHUS Compost Turners Suitable?

With our BACKHUS, we at Eggersmann offer the most comprehensive portfolio of windrow converters - no other manufacturer covers so many windrow widths and turning capacities:

What is the Standard Equipment of the BACKHUS Windrow Turners?

We have been developing and producing compost and windrow turners for almost 40 years. The experience we have gained has always been put into improving our machines – they are therefore characterised today by an extraordinary variety of practical, safe as well as economically valuable standards:

  • Eggersmann Track Control
Eggersmann Track Control is a load-dependent drive control system with an integrated load limit controller. The machines automatically adjust the forward drive to the resistance on the rotor.
  • Versatile Rotor Characteristics
The speed of the rotors is infinitely variable, giving the driver maximum process control during the pass. In addition, the rotors are reversible and can be adjusted in height independently of the frame if required.
  • Ground Contour Adjustment
The hydraulic track clearers feature automatic ground contour adjustment. They therefore glide over the ground even if it is uneven, creating a ""floating"" impression. This prevents material from the windrow from getting under the undercarriages, which provides excellent traction. If necessary, the track clearers can be individually adjusted from the cabin.
  • Panorama Cabin
The 360 degree panorama cabin offers very special comfort. An all-round sunshade, air conditioning, heating as well as a Bluetooth radio and an air-suspended driver's seat make the windrow crossing as pleasant as possible.
  • On-Board Computer
A 12.1 inch TFT touch-screen display ensures highly intuitive operation of the machines. All important information on the status of your BACKHUS is summarised here and presented in an easy-to-understand manner.
  • Maintenance Platforms
With their working platforms integrated into the cooling and engine bonnets, our BACKHUS A 45 to A 75 are particularly easy to maintain. When the bonnets are opened, the platforms fold out automatically and allow free access to all components.
  • Hydraulic Rear Flap
The hydraulic rear flap is an option with many suppliers - with us it is standard. It reduces the heap offset at the beginning of the passage and thus contributes to even better space management.
  • Sophisticated Cooling System
The BACKHUS has automatically reversible engine and hydraulic oil coolers, which can also be operated manually. The air intake takes place from the centre of the machine and is additionally protected by removable trapezoidal perforated plates, which makes cleaning easy.

What Additional Options are Available for BACKHUS Windrow Turners?

Composting, mixing or drying - different applications also require different approaches: We create a customised solution for you from a wide range of additional options and individual adaptations:

  • Irrigation System and Concentrate Spraying System
We offer the option of an irrigation system to better control the composting process. In this case, the water is supplied via a BACKHUS HD hose drum. The hose drum is connected to the turner by radio and thus automatically controls the unwinding and rewinding of the hose. Alternatively or as a supplement, there is also the option of a concentrate injection unit for even more targeted adjustment of the composting process.
  • Eggersmann Management System
This system detects the load on the hydraulic system and automatically adjusts the diesel engine speed to the power requirement. This not only ensures a smooth and constant pass, but also offers great potential for reducing fuel consumption. Savings of 5 to 10 % are possible with the system.
  • Side Conveyor
Our self-propelled BACKHUS already allow an excellent utilisation of space due to the foot-to-foot heaps. For particularly demanding space management, we also offer the option of a side shifter. Coupled to the BACKHUS, this shifts the material by one heap width during the transfer, so that a space layout according to the continuous flow principle is possible.
  • Fleece Winder
A fleece not only reduces the escape of unpleasant odours and the formation of dust, but can also optimise the rotting process, for example, by preventing the windrow from drying out or becoming soaked. With a fleece winder at the front and rear of the BACKHUS, you can wind up the fleece lying on the windrow and unwind a new fleece at the same time. This saves time and the windrow is always well protected.
  • Camera Package
For even better visibility, the machines can be equipped with three cameras. One camera is installed on the left and one on the right side of the machine. The third is mounted above the Hydraulic Rear Flap. For the cabin, there is a monitor that optionally displays all three images simultaneously or just one.
  • Mobile Cabin
The panorama cabin is also available as a mobile version. In this case, it moves down the side of the machine. This considerably reduces the effort required to prepare the machine for transport to new work sites and, on top of that, makes it easier for you to get in and out.
  • XL Track Clearer
An XL track clearer can be used to increase the maximum windrow width by 0.2 m on the BACKHUS A 38 and by 0.3 m on the BACKHUS A 45 to A 75. This enables optimum utilisation of the available space.
  • Landfill Version
In the case of unpaved or very uneven ground, we recommend changing to the landfill version. This includes massive track clearers with a wider undercarriage. The undercarriage thus provides even more traction and lower ground pressure and the track clearer frees the track from debris even under the most adverse conditions.

What Undercarriages are Available for BACKHUS Windrow Turners?

We deliver your BACKHUS from the A 38 with a crawler chassis with exchangeable rubber pads as a standard. Optionally, you have the possibility to choose a wheel chassis. You can also adapt the crawler tracks to your individual requirements by choosing bar plates, welded steel plates or the landfill tracks.

What Exactly is Composting and How Does It Differ From Biological Drying?

Even if the assumption is close, composting does not necessarily always aim at the creation of "compost" in the sense of a marketable product. Basically, the word "composting" describes the natural transformation of organic material into humus by bacteria in a rotting process. If this "compost" has a high degree of purity, it can ultimately be used as fertiliser. However, materials are often composted for which later use as fertiliser can be ruled out from the outset. Household waste, for example, often contains a high organic content that can hardly be separated from the rest of the waste – yet composting or biological drying is recommended for the following reasons alone:

  • Volume
Waste with a non-composted organic content has a much higher volume, which makes landfilling more difficult. In addition to processing the material with shredders, etc., regular turning is therefore also one of the efficient methods for decisively reducing the volume.
  • Energy Expenditure
Non-recyclable waste such as residual waste is largely treated thermally. The biofractions contained therein consist to a large extent of water, and the high moisture content therefore increases the energy demand during incineration. Biological drying with a membrane or complete composting before thermal treatment is therefore often more cost-effective.
  • Temperature
During composting, temperatures of up to 65 degrees are generated. If municipal waste is not treated before landfilling, uncontrolled composting takes place. The landfill then heats up considerably and hazardous pollutants can escape in combination with the other waste.
  • Gases
Controlled composting with converters also produces C02, but landfilling untreated material is many times more harmful to the climate. Especially in cavities sealed off from the oxygen supply, methane and nitrous oxide are quickly produced. This can be prevented by regular conversion.
