CONVAERO System

Composting With Membrane

Oxygen supply, temperature, moisture - the CONVAERO system creates optimum conditions for the microorganisms required for composting.

The CONAVERO membrane creates a controlled and monitored environment in which the microorganisms decompose the organic matter. The aeration system integrated into the base provides a steady flow of air through the waste to maintain aerobic conditions, creating an ideal environment for the composting process. The temperature rises to 55 - 65°C and ensures reliable hygienisation of the compost.
Depending on the composition of the input material, the ambient temperature and humidity, the logistics on the plant and any preceding and subsequent processes, the CONVAERO process and its capacity are adjusted to the desired degree of maturity (degree of rotting). Every product stage can be achieved, from fresh compost to fully matured compost. The material is covered for the entire duration of the process. Alternatively, it is possible to remove the covers during the later stabilisation and maturing phase.

Advantages of the Process

The process offers the following advantages:

  • Full process control
  • Shorter process times
  • Reliable hygienisation
  • Lowest CO2eq emissions
  • Odour retention at the membrane cover
  • Reduced water loss from evaporation
  • Mobile available as a test base for studies
  • Adaptable to any plant size
  • Suitable for windrows, pens and rows

Low Emissions and Reliable

The CONVAERO system is particularly effective in solving odour problems. These are one of the biggest challenges in waste treatment. It also prevents excessive water loss through evaporation while reducing the need for irrigation in relatively dry feedstock and dry climatic conditions. The leachate produced is collected by the aeration system and safely channelled away for interim storage or treatment. In addition, the energy consumption is relatively low compared to other intensive composting methods. The membranes prevent problems such as re-contamination by wind, birds and other animals. The waste is reliably hygienised and stabilised after a comparatively short process time. The system can be used for all waste with biogenic components. If the process is operated as bays or lines, even very difficult input materials such as sewage sludge or fermentation residues can be reliably processed.

Concepts for any Operation Size

Large Plants

Large plants benefit from the use of our BACKHUS CON lane turners. The innovative system of lane turning with membrane reduces water loss through evaporation, minimises space requirements and reduces handling costs to a minimum. At the same time, the operation is kept clean thanks to the side walls.

Medium Plants

For medium-sized plants or for retrofitting existing windrow composting facilities, the CONVAERO system consisting of membrane and floor aeration system is combined with one of the proven BACKHUS compost turners for triangular windrows. The turner is equipped with a front and rear winding device for holding the membranes. Just like the BACKHUS CON, it performs several tasks in a single operation: uncovering the windrow, turning and homogenising the compost material, adding water if necessary and covering the windrow again. The system benefits from the high efficiency of the turners and keeps construction costs low.

Small Plants

In smaller plants, the CONVAERO composting system can also be operated with wheel loaders only. In this case, the organic waste is composted in bays that are closed on three sides by concrete walls. A special cover winder on a trailer makes loading and unloading easier. It also prevents damage to the membrane.
