What are the Features of the BACKHUS Windrow Turners?

We have been developing and producing compost and windrow turners for almost 40 years. The experience we have gained has been continuously invested in the improvement of our machines - today they are characterised by an exceptional variety of practical, safe and economically valuable standards:

  • Eggersmann Track Control
Eggersmann Track Control is a load-dependent drive control system with an integrated load limit controller. The machines automatically adjust the forward drive to the resistance on the rotor.
  • Versatile Rotor Characteristics
The speed of the rotors is infinitely variable, giving the driver maximum process control during the pass. In addition, the rotors are reversible and can be adjusted in height independently of the frame if required.
  • Ground Contour Adjustment
The hydraulic track clearers feature automatic ground contour adjustment. They therefore glide over the ground even if it is uneven, creating a ""floating"" impression. This prevents material from the windrow from getting under the undercarriages, which provides excellent traction. If necessary, the track clearers can be individually adjusted from the cabin.
  • Panorama Cabin
The 360 degree panorama cabin offers very special comfort. An all-round sunshade, air conditioning, heating as well as a Bluetooth radio and an air-suspended driver's seat make the windrow crossing as pleasant as possible.
  • On-Board Computer
A 12 inch touch-screen display ensures highly intuitive operation of the machines. All important information on the status of your BACKHUS is summarised here and presented in an easy-to-understand manner.
  • Maintenance Platforms
With their working platforms integrated into the cooling and engine bonnets, our BACKHUS A 45 to A 75 are particularly easy to maintain. When the bonnets are opened, the platforms fold out automatically and allow free access to all components.
  • Hydraulic Rear Flap
The hydraulic rear flap is an option with many suppliers - with us it is standard. It reduces the heap offset at the beginning of the passage and thus contributes to even better space management.
  • Sophisticated Cooling System
The BACKHUS have automatically reversible engines and hydraulic oil coolers, which can also be operated manually. The air intake takes place from the centre of the machines and is additionally protected by removable trapezoidal perforated plates, which makes cleaning easy.

What Additional Options are Available for BACKHUS Windrow Turners?

Composting, mixing or drying - different applications also require different approaches: We create a customised solution for you from a wide range of additional options and individual adaptations:

  • Irrigation System and Concentrate Spraying System
We offer the option of an irrigation system to better control the composting process. In this case, the water is supplied via a BACKHUS HD hose drum. The hose drum is connected to the turner by radio and thus automatically controls the unwinding and rewinding of the hose. Alternatively or as a supplement, there is also the option of a concentrate injection unit for even more targeted adjustment of the composting process.
  • Eggersmann Management System
This system detects the load on the hydraulic system and automatically adjusts the diesel engine speed to the power requirement. This not only ensures a smooth and constant pass, but also offers great potential for reducing fuel consumption. Savings of up to 10 % are possible with the system.
  • Side Conveyor
Our self-propelled BACKHUS already allow an excellent utilisation of space due to the foot-to-foot windrwos. For particularly demanding space management, we also offer the option of a side conveyor. Coupled to the BACKHUS, this shifts the material by one windrow width during the turning, so that a space layout according to the continuous flow principle is possible.
  • Fleece Winder
A fleece not only reduces the escape of unpleasant odours and the formation of dust, but can also optimise the rotting process, for example, by preventing the windrow from drying out or becoming soaked. With a fleece winder at the front and rear of the BACKHUS, you can wind up the fleece lying on the windrow and unwind a new fleece at the same time. This saves time and the windrow is always well protected.
  • Camera Package
With the new concept comprising a total of four cameras, you always have an excellent view of the area behind the machine. There are no more blind spots. This offers you additional safety at work.
  • Mobile Cabin
The panorama cabin is also available as a mobile version. In this case, it moves down the side of the machine. This considerably reduces the effort required to prepare the machine for transport to new work sites and, on top of that, makes it easier for you to get in and out.
  • XL Track Clearer
An XL track clearer can be used to increase the maximum windrow width by 0.2 m on the BACKHUS A 38 and by 0.3 m on the BACKHUS A 45 to A 75. This enables optimum utilisation of the available space.
  • Landfill Version
In the case of unpaved or very uneven ground, we recommend changing to the landfill version. This includes massive track clearers with a wider undercarriage. The undercarriage thus provides even more traction and lower ground pressure and the track clearer frees the track from debris even under the most adverse conditions.
  • Housing
The safety and dust protection curtain significantly reduces the emissions that occur during turning - especially dust formation and uncontrolled material ejection are significantly reduced.

Why Should I Compost or Dry in Windrows?

Together with professional turning technology, the use of windrows is a highly efficient process. This is why both composting and biological drying in triangular windrows have become firmly established in a wide variety of applications around the world.

The Four Most Important Advantages:

  • Space-Saving
Windrows can be laid perfectly foot-to-foot. They are therefore extremely space-saving. In addition, a continuous process is even possible with a side conveyor.
  • Flexible
With windrows, the available space can be rearranged as required at any time. Individual windrows can also be used for different materials.
  • Chimney Draught Effect
Windrows have a natural chimney draught effect for self-ventilation. The microbes heat up the windrow as the material decomposes (4). The air inside also heats up and rises until it escapes from the top (5). This creates a vacuum pressure and fresh air is automatically drawn in via the base of the windrow (7). This effect corresponds to the ventilation principle of a chimney.
  • Water-Repellent
The trapezoidal shape automatically allows rainwater (1) to flow down the sides (2). Moisture therefore only penetrates up to 20 cm into the windrow (3). Windrow composting is therefore particularly suitable for rainy regions.

How do use the Space of my Yard most efficiently?

We can calculate the best possible arrangement and size of the individual windrows for you free of charge. We can also suggest the right BACKHUS compost turner for you.

Can I Organise my Windrows From old to new?

If you want to organise your windrows according to the continuous flow principle, you can achieve this with our side conveyor. This means you always have the windrows with the finished compost on one side and the windrows with the fresh input material on the other side of your facility. Simply remove the finished outer windrow and start turning the windrow next to it. The side conveyor will relocate it on the space of the removed windrow.

Isn't Turning With a Wheel Loader Much Cheaper,

Than Buying an Additional Machine?

We have to answer this question with a clear "no".
The turning process takes much longer and the material is not mixed as evenly.
You get a poorer end product at higher operating costs.
Still not convinced?
Then we can calculate the difference for you free of charge:

Which Chassis are Available for the BACKHUS Windrow Turners?

From the BACKHUS A 38 upwards, we supply your BACKHUS with tracks with replaceable rubber pads as standard. You have the option of choosing wheels (except A 38). Apart from that you can also customise the tracks to your individual requirements by opting for web plates, welded-on steel plates or the landfill version.
