What are refuse derived fuels - RDF?

Refuse derived fuels, also known as "alternative fuels", are materials that can be used as a substitute for fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. They are usually made from waste and recycled materials and offer both environmental and economic benefits.

RDF stands for "Refuse-Derived Fuel" and is produced from a variety of sources. These include waste, wood waste, biomass, rubber tyres and even old textiles. It is produced by processing these materials into a mouldable state so that they can be used in fuel plants.

The advantage of using substitute fuels lies in their sustainability. They help to reduce waste and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. They can also be used in many applications. For example, in cement and paper factories, power stations and even in cars and lorries.

Refuse-derived fuels are used in many countries around the world. In Europe, they are often used in power plants to generate electricity and heat. In Asia and North America, they tend to be used in cement and paper factories. There are also more and more vehicles in the automotive industry that run on biofuels.

Overall, substitute fuels offer an important opportunity to reduce waste and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. They are a sustainable alternative that offers both environmental and economic benefits and can be used in a variety of applications.
