This is where the gardener's gold is produced.

With these words, Florian Wiedemann, District Administrator of the district of Bayreuth, officially opened the renovated Am Buchstein composting plant on 12 September 2022. The plant can process 14,000 tons of organic and garden waste into compost per year. At the invitation of bke Bayreuth, representatives from local politics, the plant operator Veolia, the plant suppliers, the planners and the Bavarian State Minister for the Environment and Consumer Protection Thorsten Glauber visited the plant, which is located in a small wood.

Eggersmann has installed an innovative biowaste treatment system for the plant, which has been in operation since December 2021.

The delivered biowaste is first prepared for the process in a BRT HARTNER BOS bag opener. After a one-week drying process in the tunnel, the impurities are removed from the biowaste in a further automated treatment step.

Two star screens separate the material into three fractions. The screen overflow is first cleaned using an air separator and fed into a screw mill to reduce oversize particles.

The middle fraction is also subjected to air separation and then transferred to a (near infrared) NIR separator. Supported by a laser scanner, (hard) plastics, stones and glass can be detected and ejected using an air blast.

The screened fractions are then recombined and fed into the composting process by wheel loader.
